COMMUNITY ALERT NOTIFICATION LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT OFFICIAL PUBLICATION NORTHEAST CRIME ANALYSIS DETAIL Senior Lead Officer Leo Rey *ATTENTION* I just received word from the Bureau of Street Lighting that one of the historic bronze street lights on the Glendale Hyperion Bridge was stolen last night. The crew was investigating a light outage on the Hyperion Ave Bridge today when they discovered that the high voltage system had been cut open by someone stealing one of the antique large bronze bridge poles. Over thirty years ago this similar type of theft had occurred by someone unbolting three of the smaller antique bronze poles from the bridge along the Glendale Blvd portion and pushing them into the Los Angeles River creating a high voltage system nightmare for our lighting system. Our field staff (Maintenance Crew) at the time used our only spares to replace those three missing small poles. The Welding Crew then removed one of the special bronze ornamental anchor nuts that secure the poles to the bridge structure and welded a steel nut in its place, for every pole on the bridge. This time the thieves cut off the anchor bolts, below the welding and above the pole's base section using some kind of portable saw and then pushed the pole over! . The location for the new theft was at the stairway on the north side of the bridge from the upper level to the lower level, near the Golden State northbound on ramp (see the attached images). Welding will no longer be a sufficient deterrent this time as the thieves are smarter and have adjusted to our equipment hardening methods. We are observing that precious metal thefts (i.e. copper wire theft, now bronze) are increasing during this holiday season. We know how important this bridge is to the surrounding community. Please assist us to stop anymore thefts from occurring to this bridge and anywhere else in our neighborhoods.Spread the word widely to all your friends, neighbors, board members, parishioners, customers etc. Call 911 if you see anyone removing copper wires or the antique light poles.
